In the news: Botox for hair

Botox for hair

We know that one of the biggest contributors to frizzy summer hair is scalp sweat, and we now know that one of most effective ways to prevent excess sweating is with Botox. But what about when the two are combined? The recent trend for scalp Botox has taken off, and experts have said it could give you the glossy hair of your dreams. So what is this new trend, and is it safe?

Botox; the injectable with myriad uses. Initially developed to treat medical complaints like muscle conditions and chronic headaches, Botox is most well-known in a cosmetic context for treating deep set wrinkles, and preventing the development of more. However, it can also be used to treat other skin complaints like acne, and it can also be used to prevent sweating. Although it’s most frequently injected into the underarms for this, there’s a growing number of women who are looking to Botox to decrease scalp sweating, and therefore put an end to frizzy, frazzled hair.

When injected into the eccrine glands, Botox prevents sweating altogether. When administered to the scalp, this means fewer hair washes and less frizz. Coverts liken it to the Brazillian blow dry, in which chemicals are used to straighten the hair for up to three months at a time. Those who opt for either of the treatments can expect groomed and glossy do’s that reportedly only need to be fully styled once or twice a week.

The treatment is proving controversial, though, and some experts are arguing that Botox should not be considered with the same casual approach as a trip to the salon. Typically, Botox to the sweat glands is used to treat hyperhidrosis (excess sweating), which is considered a medical condition – whether it is experienced under the arms or on the scalp.

On this new craze Saba from Elate Health said: “I don’t think this treatment should be for women who just want to prolong their blow dry by a couple of days but it could potentially really make a difference to some peoples’ lives. We will have to see how this type of treatment progresses in the UK.”
